Some 1,29,80,367 animals are ready for the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha, said the Fisheries and Livestock Minister Md Abdur Rahman. He said 53,60,716 cows and buffaloes, 76,17,801 goats and sheep, 1,850 other species of animals are ready for sacrifice.

He said this to reporters after the inter-ministerial meeting to ascertain the demand, supply and transportation of sacrificial animals on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha at the conference room of Department of Livestock Services at Farmgate in the capital on Thursday (May 16) afternoon.

Abdur Rahman said work will be done in a pure and flawless manner to ensure the safety of the market. The meeting we had about the sacrificial animal was a success. There will be close monitoring at all stages till the end of the day of sacrifice. Everyone should fulfill the expectation that the sacrifice should be fair and beautiful.

In reply to a query over how the number of animals was determined, he said, “People of our department went door to door to survey and collect data. We have determined this number in this way.”

In response to the question about what measures have been taken to determine the price of animals, he said that if there is a difference in demand and supply, the price comes to the fore. Now, since the collection figures are prepared by checking, there will not be much difference between demand and supply. That's why it seems that the price will be affordable.

In the meeting, secretary of the ministry Salim Uddin, director general of the Livestock Department Md Reyazul Haque, President of Bangladesh Dairy Farmers Association Md Imran Hossain and others were also present.

Mohammad Imran Hossain said, “Cows come illegally from outside the country every Eid. This time too, there are reports from various places that cows are coming across the border illegally from Myanmar and India. Illegal cattle should be stopped. Rent has to be paid at every market as soon as it changes hands. Arrangements should be made to collect rent from any one of the markets. Extortion must be stopped along the way. The treatment of animals in the market should be improved.”
