1650 tonnes onions coming from India Friday
Bangladesh is going to import 50,000 tonnes of onions from India, despite the country’s ongoing ban on onion export. The first imported consignment of 1,650 tonnes of onions will enter Bangladesh from India on Friday (March 29).
Rezwanur Rahman, additional secretary of the commerce ministry, disclosed the information to the media today at the Secretariat.
He said "The onions will reach Bangladesh from India by train on Friday. Later, the rest will come by turns."
According to sources, the government has decided to import onion from India through the G2G method due to the abnormal increase in the price of onion in the country's market. In the meantime, the price of onion increased in India's domestic market and the country's government stopped exports, putting Bangladesh in trouble. At the same time, suddenly the price of the product increased a lot in Bangladesh’s market also.
But later, for the sake of friendship, the Indian government allowed the export of onion to Bangladesh in limited form. Since then, the price of the product has gradually decreased in the country's market.
Finally, a proposal to import 50,000 tonnes of onions from India was approved yesterday (March 27) in the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.
