17km traffic jam on Dhaka-Tangail highway
As a result of the ongoing road development work at Airport-Azampur portion, a long tailback has been created on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, stretching over an area of about 17 km, leaving the drivers and passengers of vehicles amid immense sufferings.
This traffic jam has been created from the eastern side of the Bangabandhu Bridge to Rasulpur at Kalihati in Tangail since early morning on Wednesday (March 6).
Elenga Highway Police, Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station and Bangabandhu Bridge Authorities are working to clear the traffic jam.
Taslim Uddin, a truck driver carrying vegetables, said that he has been stuck in the eastern side area of the bridge for an hour after crossing the bridge. “There is no possibility of reaching the vegetables to the wholesale market in Dhaka on time. Today the vehicle pressure is several times higher than other days,” he said.
In this regard, in-charge of Elenga Highway police outpost on Dhaka-Tangail highway Mir Md Sajedur Rahman said, “The vehicle pressure on the highway is high. The truck drivers fall asleep when the traffic on the road from Elenga to the eastern side of Bangabandhu Bridge becomes slow. As a result, the drivers of the other vehicles behind also think that there is a traffic jam on the road.”
“Along with the highway police, members of the district police are working to clear the traffic jam. Hopefully, the traffic jam will ease as the day progresses,” he added.
