1,891 nomination forms filed for 1st phase upazila polls

A total of 1,891 candidates on Monday submitted nomination forms to contest for three posts in the elections across 150 upazilas, scheduled for the first phase on May 8.

Out of the 1,891 candidates, 696 submitted nomination forms for the post of chairman, 724 for vice chairman, and 471 for the post of woman vice chairman.

"Today was the last day for nomination paper submission . . . this year candidates were allowed to file nomination papers online only," said Election Commission (EC) additional secretary Ashok Kumar Devnath.

According to the schedule, nomination papers will be scrutinized on April 17 and appeals against the decision of returning officers can be filed on April 18-20. Appeals will be settled on April 21 and the deadline for withdrawal of candidatures is April 22.

Symbols will be distributed on April 23.
