19 detained in Teknaf before traveling to Malaysia illegally
The Bangladesh Navy has detained 19 Rohingyas and Bangladeshis, including a broker, while they were preparing to travel to Malaysia by sea through the coastal area of Baharchara union at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
They were detained from the Kachchhpia area of the union in the early hours of Tuesday (January 21), says a press release.
According to the Bangladesh Navy release, a large number of Banglashis and Rohingyas were staying in several houses in Kachchhpia area for the purpose of trafficking to Malaysia. On information, a special team of the Navy conducted a raid in the area adjacent to Kachchhpia hills and detained a broker, two Bangladeshi citizens and 17 Rohingyas.
The detainees have been handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station for legal action.
Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station Muhammad Gias Uddin said the Navy has detained 19 people and handed them over to the police station. The broker will be sent to jail in a human trafficking case and the rest will be handed over to their families.
He said human trafficking gangs have been active in this region for a long time. Law enforcement agencies are working to stop their illegal human trafficking.
