2 bear cubs of endangered species rescued in Bandarban
Two bear cubs of an endangered species have been recovered while trying to smuggle from out the country Alikadam upazila in Bandarban.
Meanwhile, a young man was arrested for alleged involvement in the smuggling attempt, said police sources.
Police and locals said that on Tuesday (April 2), the police conducted an operation on the Alikadam-Chakaria road in Shibatali Para area of Ward No. 2 of Chaikxyong Union of Alikadam Upazila.
Meanwhile, a wildlife smuggler riding a motorcycle was arrested during the raid. His name is Md Alauddin. After searching, two bear cubs were found unconscious from his possession.
According to sources, an organized gang has been smuggling various rare species of wild animals of the mountains to various parts of the country and outside the country. Law and order forces and forest department are working against the gang.
Confirming the fact of the incident, Police Superintendent Saikat Shaheen of Bandarban said that the two rescued bear cubs have been given to the forest department to be released at Chakaria Safari Park.
He also said that the Bandarban police are trying to prevent wildlife trafficking from forest areas. A case has been filed against the arrested trafficker under the Wildlife Act.
