2 held over attack on puja mandop

Seven people have been injured in an attack on a Ganesh Puja pavilion in Joynagar village of Nabiganj municipality in Habiganj.

Earlier on Sunday night, miscreants attacked the pavilion at Jaynagar village.

Later on Monday, one Chanu Das filed a case with Nabiganj police station, naming six people and 7-8 others as unknown accused.

Nabiganj police have arrested two youths on charges of involvement in the attack.

The arrested are Mahmudur Rahman, 20, of the municipality and Tanvir Mia, 19, son of Billal Mia of Collegepara area.

Severely injured--Shribas Das, 32, Nayan Das, 18, and Mamata Das, 30--have been admitted to Nabiganj Upazila Health Complex.

Locals said that the 'Jayanagar Apayayan Sangha' has been organizing Ganesh Puja in Joynagar village for the past decade. This year too, a cultural programme was organized as part of the puja at the house of local Chanu Das.

During the programme, some youth from the neighboring village attended and participated. At one stage, they got into an argument with the organizers over behavioral issues, the youth were asked to leave the venue.

After a while, 15-20 people including Mahmudur and Tanvir attacked the pavilion with country-made weapons.

The furniture including chairs of the pavilion was vandalized. Upon receiving the information, the police, led by Nabiganj Police Station OC (Investigation) Dulal Miya, visited the scene.

Nabiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Kamal Hossain said that the operation to arrest the remaining accused is underway.
