2 killed as oil tanker overturns, catches fire in Savar
Two people were burnt to death and seven others injured when a tank lorry carrying oil overturned and caught fire on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar on Tuesday morning.
Savar Fire Service Station Officer Nurul Islam confirmed the matter. He said, "The fire quickly spread and engulfed two other trucks and a car on the Dhaka-Aricha highway early on Tuesday."
Dr Md Tariqul Islam, resident surgeon of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said, "Eight people were rushed to the Institute after the incident. Among them, Md Nazrul, 45, died before arriving at the hospital. Milan, 22, Mim, 10, Al Amin, 35, Niranjan, 45, Shakib, 24, Helal, 21, and Abdus Salam, 35, are currently hospitalized."
"Helal and Sakib suffered 100% burn injuries," he added.
Sub-Inspector Russel Molla of Savar Tannery Police Outpost said, " The body of another unidentified person, who was killed in the accident, is in the custody of the police."
Savar Fire Service Station Officer Nurul Islam, "Due to the construction of a road divider, stones were strewn along a section of the highway in the Jorpul area, blocking a U-turn."
Nurul Islam said, "Around 5:30am, an oil tanker hit the stones obstructing the U-turn while traveling from Gabtoli to Savar, causing it to overturn and ignite."
"On information, an ambulance and two units of Savar Fire Service and Civil Defense rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control. But in the meantime, apart from the oil tanker, two trucks and a private car were completely burnt."
