Scuffle in Supreme Court
3 assistant attorney generals sacked
Three assistant attorney generals have been sacked for their involvement in the Friday’s ruckus and scuffle centring the results of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) election.
They are Zakir Hossain Masud, Kazi Bashir and Shyama Akhter, says a press release from the law ministry on Monday.
According to the release, the appointment order of Bangladesh Supreme Court Advocate Zakir Hossain, Advocate Kazi Bashir Ahmed and Advocate Shyama Akhtar as assistant attorney general has been cancelled. The cancellation order will be effective immediately.
Earlier, the SCBA polls were held on March 6 and 7. After the peaceful polling, preparations for the counting continued till late on Thursday night. All the candidates including Awami League’s White Panel and BNP’s Blue Panel were present in the SC bar auditorium at that time. While the blue and independent panel candidates wanted the counting of votes at night, the white panel candidates demanded the counting on Friday. The opposing demands triggered an altercation between the lawyers which deteriorated into further scuffles on Friday morning. At that time, Assistant Attorney General Saif Siddiqui was beaten by some lawyers.
On Friday afternoon, Saif Siddiqui filed an attempt to murder case with Shahbag police station in the capital over the incident. The case was filed against 20 named lawyers including independent candidate Nahid Sultana Juthi, and pro-BNP lawyer Ruhul Quddus Kajal, and 30-40 unidentified persons.
