Four individuals have been detained in connection with a recent mugging incident in the capital’s Moghbazar area. A Dhaka court on Friday granted a three-day remand for each of the suspects.

Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan Jennifer Zerin passed the order after hearing a remand plea submitted by the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Ibrahim Khalil of Hatirjheel Police Station, who had sought five days’ remand for each accused.

The arrestees have been identified as Md Sohel Rana, Md Jibon alias Hridoy, Md Shamim, and Mokbul Hossain. Police said Sohel, Jibon, and Shamim were directly involved in the mugging, while Mokbul was the buyer of the stolen goods.

Detectives from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) arrested Sohel from Keraniganj and the others from Mohammadpur on May 29. Law enforcement also recovered the snatched bag, Tk 9,600 in cash, a mobile phone, two machetes used in the attack, and a motorcycle.

The incident occurred on May 18 in Greenway Lane, Moghbazar. CCTV footage of the mugging later went viral on social media, prompting public outrage. The video showed a young man being intercepted by three assailants while walking with a bag. They attacked him, seized the bag, and struck him with a machete when he resisted. The victim was seen pleading for help after falling in front of their motorcycle, but the attackers hit him again before fleeing.

On May 26, the victim, identified as Abdullah, filed a case at Hatirjheel Police Station.

Police informed that the investigation is ongoing.
