5 detained over Uttara abduction case; student rescued
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have detained five members of a professional abduction gang and rescued a student abducted from Uttara.
On Friday (May 30), Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Department confirmed the arrests and rescue to the media.
DMP Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman informed that the police raided a building in Sector 11, Uttara on Wednesday afternoon (May 28). The operation led to the rescue of the victim and the arrest of five suspects.
The police recovered approximately BDT 14.1 million in cash, 60 yaba tablets, two CCTV cameras, and three mobile phones from the criminals.
The arrested are Md. Masum Parvez (38), Md. Solaiman Hossain (38), Shafiqul Islam Sourav (27), Mosha Maya (25), and Mosha Ruli Khanam (19).
The victim, a 12th-grade student of Manipur School and College, went missing on May 26 after leaving her home in Rupnagar Residential Area. On the following night, hermother received a ransom call demanding BDT 50,000, prompting her to report the case to Uttara West Police Station.
Using technological assistance, police tracked down the abductors’ location and conducted the successful rescue. Several gang members escaped during the raid.
During questioning, the suspects admitted to kidnapping teenagers under false job promises, detaining them, and then extorting money by threatening to release explicit photos and videos on social media.
Cases have been filed against them under laws related to child protection, narcotics control, and pornography. They have been sent to court.
The DMP has urged parents and teenagers to stay vigilant and cautious of job offers or social media contacts that could be fraudulent.
