56 of world's top 100 green factories in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has 56 out of 100 eco-friendly factories in the world. The number of green factories in the country has increased to 218 as another factory in the country recently obtained the prestigious ‘LEED’ certificate, says a Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) press release sent to the media on Wednesday (May 29).
Mentionable, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the world's most widely used green building rating system. LEED certification provides a framework for green buildings and is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement. US Green Building Council (USGBC) provides the certificate which is recognized worldwide. To obtain this certificate, a project must maintain the highest standards from construction to production under the supervision of the USGBC.
The BGMEA said another platinum rated ‘LEED” factory has been added to the list of environmentally friendly green factories. With this, Bangladesh has become home to 218 LEED certified factories. The new eco-friendly factory is of KC Jacket Wear Company located at Kachkura at Uttara in the capital. This factory has scored 84.
Out of the 218 LEED certified eco-friendly green factories, 84 are platinum rated and 120 are gold rated, 10 are silver rated and four are certified. Now 56 of the top 100 highest quality LEED factories worldwide are located in Bangladesh.
There are a total of 110 points for fulfilling the nine conditions for the LEED certificate. If the score is above 80 points, it is rated 'Lead Platinum', to be rated as 'Lead Gold', a factory has to score 60-79 points, 'Lead Silver' if the score is 50-59 points and 'Lead Certified' if 40-49 points.
Another 500 factories in Bangladesh are in the process of getting LEED certified, the BGMEA release added.
