6 sentenced to death in Sirajganj for murder of vegetable trader
A court in Sirajganj has sentenced six people to death in the case of the murder of vegetable trader Nazmul Islam, 25. Additionally, each convict has been fined 10,000 BDT, and if they fail to pay, they will serve one more month of simple imprisonment.
District and Sessions Judge M. Ali Ahmed delivered the verdict in the absence of the accused on Tuesday (May 20). Government lawyer Advocate Rafique Sarkar and defense lawyer Abul Kalam Azad were present at the time.
The court’s assistant, Md. Monowar Hossain, confirmed the judgment. The convicts are, Khaja Mia and Bosu Mia, sons of Haidar Ali from Pardhundia village in Gobindaganj of Gaibandha. Enamul Haque, son of the late Moyez Uddin from Horinathpur village. Mujahid Sheikh, son of the late Mojibur Sheikh from Dargapara village. Saiful Islam, son of Abdur Rahman Pradhan from Madardah East Para village. Milon Sarkar, son of Nazrul Islam from Ramnagar village in Saghata Upazila.
Among them, Saiful Islam of Gobindaganj passed away during the trial, so he has been exempted. The rest of the convicts are currently fugitives.
According to the case documents, Nazmul Islam, son of Abdur Rahman from Kismat-Kasba village in Balihaar Union of Naogaon Sadar, was a vegetable trader. He used to purchase vegetables from Chak Gaurihat in Naogaon and sell them in Dhaka.
Nazmul was returning home from Baipail of Dhaka after selling vegetables when he was kidnapped on August 10, 2017. The kidnappers later demanded ransom from his family. When they did not receive the 1 million BDT (10 lakh taka) they asked for, they murdered him.
Two days later, his body was recovered near Ruposhi Bangla Hotel beside the Dhaka–Bogura highway, under the Salanga Police Station area of Sirajganj.
After the body was found, a case was filed at **Salanga Police Station**, and police began their investigation. The suspects were identified using **phone call records** from the mobile used to demand the ransom.
This verdict brings justice in a case that involved a brutal abduction and killing for money, highlighting the importance of timely investigation and court proceedings.
