80% sugar stored in S Alam mill saved: Fire Service DG
Director General (DG) of Fire Service and Civil Defense Brigadier General Md Main Uddin said that 80 percent of unrefined sugar stored in the warehouse of S Alam Refined Sugar Mill has been saved.
“One hundred thousand metric tonnes of raw material of sugar was stored in the factory. It has been possible to save 80 percent of this,” he said while talking to journalists in Chattogram on Thursday (March 7) afternoon.
Earlier on Monday (March 4) afternoon, a fire broke out in the sugar factory under Karnaphuli police station in the port city. On information, nine units of five local fire stations reached the spot and started working to douse the fire. Later, the army, navy, air force and coast guard joined the effort to control the terrible fire.
Main Uddin said, “The fire has been brought under control with the efforts of 18 units of the army, navy and air force. However, small flames are still visible at some places. It will be possible to douse the fire completely by the evening.”
He also said, “The reason for the delay in bringing the fire under control is that the raw materials that were there are flammable. Even after giving water, they flare up again.”
