A 65-day ban on sea fishing begins midnight
A 65-day ban on all types of fishing including hilsa in the sea is starting from midnight today (May19).
The fishermen of Alipur-Mahipur fishing port and Kuakata coast area have completed preparations to comply with this ban.
According to the sources of the Department of Fisheries, May-June is the breeding season of various species of fish in the sea. Deep sea fishing is banned for 65 days from May 20 to June 23 every year to ensure safe breeding and post-breeding growth of fishes.
Sources said the ban announced by the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry will start on Sunday (May 19) at 12:00pm and will continue until July 23 (Tuesday) at 12:00pm.
Meanwhile, coastal fishermen said although the government ban will protect fish breeding grounds, the earning of half a million people involved in this profession on the coastal areas will be closed for two months due to the ban.
In this context, Deputy Director of Barishal Divisional Fisheries Department Nripendra Nath Biswas told the media that instructions have been given in the task force committee meeting to implement the 65-day ban in the sea. Each registered fisherman family will assisted with 56 kg of rice for this period.
