Eminent artist Mustafa Monwar on life support
Legendary Bangladeshi painter, sculptor and cultural personality Mustafa Monwar, lovingly known as Bangladesh's ‘Puppet Man’, has been put on life support in a private hospital in the capital.

According to family sources of the artist, he has been suffering from various physical problems for a long time, most notably from pneumonia and prostate cancer.

On Saturday when his physical condition worsened, he was put on life support at Square Hospital, reports UNB.

Ronaldo nets late goal as Portugal beat Scotland
Portugal substitute Cristiano Ronaldo struck a late winner as his side came from a goal down to beat Scotland 2-1 and continue their strong start to the Nations League on Sunday.

After Bruno Fernandes had fired in Portugal's equaliser, Ronaldo pounced in the 88th minute for his 901st career goal, reports Reuters.

Scotland were given hope of a first win against Portugal since 1980 as they took a shock lead through Scott McTominay's bullet header in the seventh minute. But the visitors ended up with nothing to show for their efforts as 39-year-old Ronaldo again delivered for his country.

Israeli strikes in central Syria kill seven
Israeli strikes in central Syria killed at least seven people late Sunday, including three civilians, reports AFP.

Since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes there, targeting pro-Iranian groups in particular.

48 killed as fuel tanker hits truck, causing explosion in Nigeria
A fuel tanker has collided with another truck in Nigeria, causing an explosion that killed at least 48 people, according to the country’s emergency response agency.

The fuel tanker was also carrying cattle in the Agaie area in north-central Niger state and at least 50 of them were burned alive, Abdullahi Baba-Arab, director-general of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, said on Sunday.

Search-and-rescue operations were under way at the scene of the accident, he said.

Joy demands justice for former Chhatra League leader in Rajshahi
In a recent Facebook post, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, has urged for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the individuals responsible for the murder of Abdullah Al Masud, a former leader of the Chhatra League at Rajshahi University.

Masud had recently become a father to a baby girl on September 3.

Gvt. appoints new DC in 25 districts
The government has announced the appointment of new Deputy Commissioners (DCs) for 25 districts across the country.

The Ministry of Public Administration’s Field Administration-2 branch made this announcement through a notification issued on Monday (September 9).

BSF firing kills teen at Thakurgaon border
A teenage boy was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Kantivita border in Thakurgaon’s Baliadangi upazila early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Jayanta Kumar Shing, 14.

Officer-in-Charge of Baliadangi Police Station Firoz Kabir confirmed the border killing to Views Bangladesh.

BDR mutiny case
17 special prosecutors appointment revoked

The government has cancelled the appointments of 17 special prosecutors, including Mosharraf Hossain Kajol, in connection with the 2009 mutiny case at the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) headquarters in Pilkhana.

Confirming the matter on Monday (September 9), Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, said, "The trial for the BDR mutiny will commence soon."

Important to transform prisons into true correctional facilities: Adviser
Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said it is important to transform prisons into true correctional facilities. He also added that most of the problems of the prison system can be solved by stopping bribery and corruption.

The adviser made the remark while addressing a meeting with prison officials as the chief guest this morning at the Department of Prisons in Bakshibazar, Dhaka.

79 factories announce closure amid workers protests
At least 79 factories in Ashulia, located from Baipail to Zirabo, remained closed on Monday amid the workers' ongoing protests.

Md Sarwar Alam, superintendent of Industrial Police-1, confirmed the matter to Views Bangladesh. However, factories in other areas of Ashulia remained operational until 11am.

The industrial police, army, RAB, BGB, and other law enforcement agencies are maintaining a strong presence to ensure security in the area.
