AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik is healthy: Prison authorities
There were rumors circulating on social media that former judge A. H. M. Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, who is detained in the Dhaka Central Jail, had passed away. However, the prison authorities have clarified that this information is false. They stated that Shamsuddin Chowdhury is alive and healthy in the Dhaka Central Jail.
Since Monday morning news of Shamsuddin Chowdhury's death spread on Facebook, claiming that he had passed away in the Dhaka Central Jail. When contacted for clarification, Mohammad Jahangir Kabir Chowdhury, the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons for the Dhaka Division, told Prothom Alo that the former judge is in good health. He further mentioned that Shamsuddin Chowdhury has received a "division" in the jail and that he is facing five cases.
After the fall of the Awami League government following a student and public uprising on August 5 of the previous year, A. H. M. Shamsuddin Chowdhury attempted to escape to India through an illegal border crossing at Kanaighat in Sylhet on August 23. He was detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at that time. On the morning of August 24, he was handed over to the Kanaighat police. Since then, he has been in prison.
