AL leader beaten up in police presence in Sylhet court
An Awami League (AL) leader was beaten up while being taken to court by police in Sylhet.
The AL leader Amir Hossain Nuru, president of Paschim Gauripur Union Awami League in Balaganj upazila of Sylhet.
The incident took place on court premises on Thursday (December 19) afternoon was being taken to the Sylhet Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court.
Witnesses said when the police brought Nuru to the court premises, he was attacked. Some people started beating him with sticks and punches in the court premises and on the balcony. At that time, the police stopped them. Blood started coming out of his nose during the attack.
Earlier on Wednesday (December 18) evening, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-9 conducted a raid on the road in front of Bangladesh Betar's Mirer Maidan centre in Sylhet city and arrested Amir Hussain Nuru. Later, he was handed over to Balaganj Police Station at 8:30pm.
Sources said in the national elections held on December 30, 2018, the general secretary of the Upazila Chhatra Dal, Sayem Ahmed Suhel, was shot dead for obstructing the voting at the polling station at Azijpur Government Primary School in West Gouripur union of Balaganj, which is part of Sylhet-3 constituency. Later, Lutfur Rahman, the cousin of the deceased and also former chairman of West Gouripur union, filed a CR case naming 5 people and 250 people as anonymous accused.
