All Moulvibazar rivers flowing above danger level
Due to heavy rains and flash floods coming down from upstream, the water of all the rivers of Moulvibazar is flowing over the the danger level.
Manu River water was flowing 117cm above the danger level at Chandnighat point at 9:00 am on Thursday (August 22).
According to local sources, rainfall is continuing in the district. As a result, the water is increasing abnormally. Erosion has already occurred in five places of Manu River and eight places of Dhalai River. New areas are being flooded as water is entering localities through the eroded river banks.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Mohammad Chadu Mia said, “All the houses have been submerged in the flood water. About 70,000 residents are trapped in water. So far, 4325 people have gone to the shelter centres. Some 1050 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 25 lakh in cash have been allocated for the flood victims.”
District Fisheries Officer Shahnewaz Siraji said, “Approximately, 210 metric tonnes of fish were washed away from 1650 ponds due to the flood water, incurring about Tk 5 crore losses to the fish traders.”
District Superintendent of Police md Manjur Rahman said, “Additional police have been deployed to protect the city and people's property. Chief Engineer of Sylhet Md Shafiqul Islam on behalf of the Water Development Board and Moulvibazar administrator Abdul Momin are supervising the overall relief and rescue efforts.”
