Allegation of recruitment trade raised against BSMMU VC
The doctors of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University (BSMMU) have launched a movement against the vice-chancellor of the university.
The movement has been created centring on the appointment of at least 30 people at the end of the term of Vice-Chancellor Sharfuddin Ahmed.
On Saturday (March 23), Sharfuddin Ahmed's personal assistant was allegedly beaten up and thrown out of the university. At the same time, one person has been reportedly beaten out of the super specialized branch of BSMMU.
The teachers of the pro-Awami League Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad (Swachip) protested in front of the VC’ office on Saturday (March 23), complaining of anomalies in recruitment. Officials and nurses of the university also participated in the agitation.
Contacted, VC Sharfuddin Ahmed said, "They have beaten some people, I have heard about it. I will talk to the law enforcement agency.”
Sharfuddin's term ends on March 28. Already, former Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services Professor Deen Md Nurul Haque has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU on March 11.
Vice-Chancellor Sharfuddin has been accused of appointing ‘hundreds’ of teachers, officials and employees before the end of the term. Alleging corruption in these appointments, the leaders of the BSMMU unit of Swachip are protesting at the moment of his departure.
Professor Md Ariful Islam Zwardar Tito, member secretary of BSMMU branch of Swachip, said. “The name of new VC Din Sir has been announced some time ago. A section of doctors tried to protest because the VC is coming from outside the university. But we, who took part in Chhatra League politics in our student life and are leading Swachip at BSMMU, have one thing to say - we would accept and welcome anyone appointed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”
“Usually after a VC is appointed, the previous VC only does the day-to-day routine, which has been the case in the past. But the current vice-chancellor has stepped up to appoint more than a hundred doctors, staff and about 30 administrative officers. Everyone thinks there is a money transaction behind these appointments,” he added.
