Amanullah Aman's 13-year prison sentence overturned
The Appellate Division has acquitted BNP leader Amanullah Aman of the 13-year prison sentence given by the High Court in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of acquiring illegal assets and concealing information in his asset declaration. The court also acquitted his wife Sabera Aman in the case.
The Appellate Division headed by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam gave the verdict on Wednesday (April 30) after hearing the matter.
Amanullah Aman's lawyer, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, said that the High Court's verdict has been quashed by accepting the appeal filed by the two against the verdict.
Amanullah Aman's lawyer, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, said that there is no legal obstacle to Amanullah Aman participating in future elections after his acquittal.
Earlier, the same court had fixed April 30 for the verdict in the case on March 4. On September 12, 2023, BNP leader Aman Ullah Aman filed an appeal against his 13-year sentence in a corruption case. He sought acquittal in the appeal.
On March 6, 2007, the ACC filed a case against the Aman couple at the capital's Kafrul Police Station on charges of concealing information about assets and acquiring assets undeclared. On June 21 of that year, a special judge's court sentenced Aman Ullah Aman to 13 years in prison and his wife Sabera to three years. They then appealed to the High Court against that verdict.
The High Court acquitted them on August 16, 2010. The ACC later appealed against the High Court's verdict to the Appellate Division. The Appellate Division quashed the High Court's verdict on May 26, 2014 and ordered a rehearing of the appeal.
On May 30, 2023, the same bench of the High Court upheld the 13-year prison sentence of Aman and his wife Sabera Aman in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) case.
