Army deployed as floodwaters breach embankment in Satkhira
The army has been deployed in Satkhira’s Assasuni Upazila to assist in relief efforts after the collapse of a section of an embankment sent floodwaters surging into villages.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate confirmed the deployment through a media statement on Wednesday April 2).
According to the statement, the breach occurred when approximately 150 feet of the embankment in Anulia Union crumbled into the Kholpetua River around 11am on Mar 31.
Residents attempted to construct a temporary barrier but to no avail due to the rapid rise in tidal pressure.
On Tuesday morning, local authorities, including the deputy commissioner of Satkhira, a representative from the Water Development Board, the Upazila executive Officer, or UNO, and officials from the military’s 55th Infantry Division, inspected the damage and initiated emergency measures.
“At present, two patrol teams from the Assasuni Camp remain stationed in the area, assisting residents and local officials in reinforcing the embankment,” the ISPR statement said.
“Additionally, an engineering team from the 55th Infantry Division has been deployed to carry out repair work.”
