Arrested BNP leader expelled over VGD rice scam

Md. Shahjahan, general secretary of Char Ashtadhar Union unit BNP in Nakla upazila of Sherpur district, has been arrested on charges of hoarding VGD rice for the poor and needy and selling it at high prices. The upazila BNP has also expelled him from the party.

On Saturday (May 31), a letter signed by upazila BNP convener Md. Khorshedur Rahman and member secretary Md. Mahmudul Haque Dulal said that Md. Shahjahan has been temporarily expelled as his activities tarnished the party's image.

A total of 96 sacks of VGD rice were seized from the Narayankhola Bazar area and from an under-construction building in a separate operations by the joint forces late on Thursday (May 29). Shahjahan was arrested in the operation and a local court sent him to jail on Friday (May 30) afternoon.

A case has been filed against 6-7 unidentified people, including two named in connection with this incident.
