In Tongi, Gazipur, two siblings named Maliha Akhter, 6, and Md. Abdullah, 4, were hacked to death by their mother Saleha Begum in their house, according to the police. She confessed to the murder to the police at midnight on Friday. However, she did not give any information about why or for what reason she killed them.

According to the information received, the name of the father of the two deceased children is Abdul Baten Mia. He is a resident of Tatuakandi area of ​​Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria. He used to live with his family in a flat on the third floor of an eight-storey building called Setu Villa in Jamaibazar area of ​​Arichpur. Police said that there are several CCTV cameras around the house where the family used to live in Arichpur, Tongi. The footage from these cameras shows that no one except Saleha Begum was in their house or flat during the time the incident took place. In addition, after the incident, Saleha herself called her two brothers-in-laws from the neighbouring house. As her speech was incoherent, she was arrested in the evening and taken to police custody. At that time, the police became suspicious when they saw cuts on her hands. At one point, Saleha Begum confessed to killing her two children in the middle of the night.

Why would a mother kill her own children? Police said that Saleha Begum's relatives said that she was suffering from migraines; But no information was available on whether there was a mental problem. The matter can be clarified further by talking to the doctors. The police are now continuing the investigation.

But we have seen before that children were sacrificed due to family unrest and misunderstandings between husband and wife, and extramarital affairs. This is in no way the hallmark of a healthy society. There is no room for seeing these as isolated incident. When these incidents are published in the media, other people also suffer from mental stress.

The reasons for these brutal incidents must be investigated. More research is needed on the psychological aspects of people. It is not credible that a mother would hack her children to death if she has only a medical condition. The deeper reasons behind this must be unearthed. If the reasons are not known, remedies cannot be given. These cannot be controlled through law alone. For that, it is necessary to strengthen the family and social bonding and increase values. There is a kind of instability going on in our society and state. There is unhealthy competition going on. Initiatives must be taken to stop this. The blame for this cannot be placed on the shoulders of any particular individual, every person in society must take responsibility for it. The state must take the most responsibility. In a modern state, the state alone is responsible for the illness and failure of every individual. The state must definitely build such a tolerant social system where children are not killed by their mothers. We want a beautiful social state where children are safe with their parents.
