Assistant presiding officer dies on duty at poll centre

An assistant presiding officer named Md Emdadul Haque has died after feeling ill while he was on duty at a poll centre of Habiganj Sadar Upazila Parishad polls.

The incident took place around 11:00am on Wednesday (May 29) at Umednagar Municipal High School poll centre of the upazila.

Emdadul Haque was the deputy assistant engineer of Habiganj Sadar office of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), said LGED Habiganj Executive Engineer Faridul Islam.

He said, “Emdadul Haque felt chest pain while on duty at the poll centre in the morning. Later, he was rushed to Habiganj Sadar Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead.”

“His body has been sent to his home in Pabna after the Janaja prayer at noon. He is survived by his wife and a son,” Faridul Islam added.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of Habiganj Sadar Hospital Momin Uddin Chowdhury said Emdadul suffered from heart attack. He died after about 10 minutes of treatment at the hospital.

Habiganj Additional Regional Election Officer Jahangir Alam said that due to the death of Assistant Presiding Officer Emdadul Haque, a polling officer has been assigned in his place as per the rules.
