At least 40 injured as clash between 2 villages erupts in Habiganj
A violent clash broke out in Habiganj town between residents of two villages over picking up passengers in battery-powered autorickshaws (easybikes). The conflict lasted for about an hour and left at least 40 people injured, including five police officers. The injured were rescued and admitted to Habiganj District Sadar Modern Hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred on Monday (May 12) in the Shayestanagar area of Habiganj town. After receiving news of the clash, police and army personnel arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
According to local residents, the clash began when a dispute arose over picking up passengers in an easybike between a local resident in Shayestanagar and another person from Bara Bahula village on the outskirts of the town. A verbal argument escalated into a physical altercation. Eventually, the matter was announced over a loudspeaker, which led both sides to gather in large numbers, armed with locally made weapons, and engage in a two-hour-long clash. The fight spread from Shayestanagar to the No. 2 Bridge area. During the violence, at least 40 people from both sides were injured.
Locals also reported that among the injured, Bappi Mia, Rukon Mia, Suman Mia, Shawon Khan, Abdus Salam, Murad Mia, and Golam Mahbub received treatment at Habiganj Sadar Modern Hospital.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Habiganj Sadar Model Police Station, AKM Shahabuddin Shahin, said that several police personnel, including himself, were injured while trying to stop the clash. The situation is now under control, and additional police forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
