Autorickshaw driver beaten to death at BNP office in Ctg

An autorickshaw driver named Md Rubel (27) was allegedly beaten to death on suspicion of theft at Rangunia upazila of Chittagong.

The murder took place at the local BNP office.

The incident took place at around 12:30 am on Thursday (December 26) in the Islamia Para area of Lalanagar union of the upazila.

The deceased Rubel is the son of Mohammad Ali of Chandraghona Bongram area of Rangunia upazila. However, he had been living in his in-laws' house in Ward No. 5 of Lalanagar for a long time. He has a six-year-old son.

According to local sources, the deceased Rubel had went out to get fuel gas for his CNG-autorickshaw around 2:30am. On the way to get gas station, he came to Banderajapara area of Lalanagar when some locals stopped him. They alleged that Rubel had stolen Tk 2 lakh and three mobile phones from one Kamrul's mobile shop at Dhamairhat Bazar on the night of December 25.

Sources said those angry people took Rubel to the Lalanagar union BNP office and beat him severely. He confessed to the theft there. When he revealed the names of two of his accomplices, they also brought them and beat them. Rubel became weak due to the beating and the miscreants left him in that state. Later, Rubel's body was recovered from there in the morning with his hands and feet tied.

Jasim, the elder brother of the deceased's wife, said, "This auto-rickshaw is mine. I had sent Rubel to get gas. On the way, some people got into the car from the Shantiniketan area of the Mariamnagar DC road. When they reached the Banderajapara area, some locals, along with the passengers in the auto-rickshaw, committed this incident. He died from a long beating from 12:30 am to early morning."

Meanwhile, locals alleged that the deceased Rubel was involved in multiple thefts before. He was caught stealing two months ago. After that, his wife and his wife's elder brother Md Jasim took him from the local court after paying a bond and a fine.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rangunia Model Police Station Sabbir Mohammad Selim said, “A man named Rubel was beaten to death on Thursday night. His body was recovered and brought to the police station. An autopsy will be conducted on the body.”
