Despite rumors of the Awami League participating in the upcoming national elections, the party will not be able to return, said Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, in a post on his verified Facebook profile on Wednesday (January 22).

In his Facebook post, the Press Secretary explained that supporters of the Awami League, who support genocide, are under the misconception that if the country returns to elections, they will be able to rejoin the political process. However, this will not be possible unless those responsible for crimes against humanity admit their guilt and those involved in murders and disappearances are eradicated. Additionally, members of the Awami League and its allies involved in the killings and human rights violations from 2009 to 2024 will also be held accountable.

Shafiqul Alam further mentioned that in recent months, he has met with various foreign diplomats and officials, who have rarely called for reconciliation. They have understood that if criminals do not admit their crimes, how can reconciliation be proposed? Instead, they have shown more support for reforms and fixing the country’s institutions.

He also accused Awami League supporters of trying to erase the memories of the 1974 famine, the killings by the Rakhkhi Bahini, and Sheikh Mujib’s one-party rule year after year.

He further stated that the current generation has now awakened and is aware of every human rights violation under the autocratic rule. Their efforts are continually reviving the old memories.
