Awami League's January 7 election expenditure Tk2.75cr
Awami League has spent Tk 2.75 crore on campaigning, including posters and public meetings, for more than 250 candidates in the twelfth parliamentary election held on January 7 last.
Two months after the election, the party submitted the expenditure statement to the Election Commission (EC) on Monday (April 1). According to the Representation of the People Order, the party was allowed to spend a maximum of Tk 4.5 crore.
Earlier in 2018, the ruling party showed expenditure of Tk 1.05 crore in the 11th parliamentary election.
A delegation led by Awami League presidium member Kazi Zafarullah went to the Nirbachan Bhaban at Agargaon in the capital and submitted the statement of expenditure to EC Secretary Md Jahangir Alam.
Later, Zafar Ullah told the reporters, “We had a spending limit of Tk 4.5 crore, but we spent less than that.”
The treasurer of the party HN Ashiqur Rahman said the total electoral expenditure of Awami League in the 12th parliamentary election was Tk 2,76,78,120.
He said, “Our total expenditure was less than the target as the candidates spent on their own. The party did not have to bear the whole cost. Where other partie spend Tk 10, we spend Tk 2. The expenditure was on printing posters, organizing public meetings etc.”
Awami League nominated candidates for 266 seats in the 12th parliamentary elections on January 7. A few days ago, the EC urged the parties participating in the election to submit an account of the party's election expenses.
There is an obligation to submit the expenditure account of a party’s election expenses within 90 days after the January 7 election.
