The identity of Avishruti Shastri alias Brishti Khatun, who died in a terrible fire incident at Green Cozy Cottage on Bailey Road in the capital, has been confirmed through DNA test after 10 days of her unfortunate death.

The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test was conducted at the forensic lab of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police.

Through the DNA test, it has been confirmed that her father is Shablul Alam Shabuj Sheikh and mother is Beauty Khatun, said CID forensic department DIG AKM Nahidul Islam on Sunday (March 10) night.

He said DNA samples were collected from Sabuj Sheikh and Beauty khatun who claimed to be her parents. At the same time, DNA samples were also collected from the body of the deceased. It has been confirmed in the lab that Brishti’s father is Sabuj Shiekh and her mother is Beauty Khatun.

“The DNA report will be sent to the police station and her body will be handed over to the parents,” DIG Nahidul added.

Meanwhile, Sabuj Sheikh said that they have not been officially informed about the results of the DNA test.
Brishti Khatun was one of the 46 people who died in the terrible Bailey Road fire on February 29. Brishti was known as Avishruti Shastri to her friends, colleagues and on Facebook. But due to her familiarity as Avishruti Shastri, complications arose over the transfer of her body.

Priest of a temple in the capital claimed her to be a Hindu after her death.

On the other hand, Shabuj Shiekh and Beauty Khatun claimed to be her parents. They said her name was not Avishruti. Her name was Brishti Khatun and she was their daughter. Consequently, police decided to carry out the DNA test.

Brishti hailed from Bonogram village at Betbaria union of Khoksa upazila in Kushtia. Avishruti Shastri’s name in college certificate, birth registration and national identity card is Brishti Khatun. But friends and colleagues knew her as Avishruti.

Her body is now preserved at the morgue of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
