5 closed Ghumdhum schools open Wednesday
Bandarban border becomes quiet
A decision has been made to open the five primary schools at Ghumdhum union under Naikhongchhari upazila in Bandarban as the border situation has returned to normalcy.
The schools were declared closed about a month ago due to the ongoing war between Myanmar military and rebel forces across the border in Rakhine state of the neighbouring country.
After a long month, classes will start in the schools from next Wednesday (February 28), said Triratan Chakma, Primary Education Officer of Naikxyongchari.
The schools that were closed along the border are: Baishfari Government Primary School, Bhajabaniya Government Primary School, Tumbru Government Primary School, Tumbru Paschimkul Government Primary School and Reju Gorjanbunia Government Primary School.
Deputy Commissioner of Bandarban Shah Mojahid Uddin said, “Due to the unstable situation on the Myanmar border, the five government primary schools along the border were declared closed on January 29 considering security reasons. However, as the border situation has calmed down, a decision has been made to open the schools. Classes will resume in schools from next Wednesday.”
However, Bangladesh Border Guard members were seen on alert in the border areas on Monday (February 26) also.
Jahangir Aziz, chairman of Ghumdhum union, said the situation at the border is now normal. The border people are working in the fields without fear. In the Tumbru market, sales have gained momentum as before.
