Bangladesh condemns desecration of national flag in Kolkata

Bangladesh government has strongly condemned the desecration of national flag and the burning of an effigy of Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus during a protest in Kolkata.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in this regard on Friday.

According to the statement, Bangladesh called upon the Indian government to take immediate measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The interim government also expressed deep concern over the protest, organized on Thursday afternoon by a Hindu group called Bongio Hindu Jagran, outside the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh in Kolkata.

The protest reportedly turned violent as demonstrators broke through police barricades and reached the commission's boundary. The protesters set fire to the Bangladeshi national flag and an effigy of the chief adviser.

The statement said Bangladesh condemns all forms of violence and urged India to ensure the safety and security of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, other diplomatic missions in India, and all Bangladeshi diplomats and staff members.

"Although the situation seems to be under control at the moment, there is a prevailing sense of insecurity among the members of the Deputy High Commission," the ministry added.

Bangladesh has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peaceful diplomatic relations and called on India to address the incident promptly to uphold the sanctity of diplomatic premises and the dignity of both nations.
