Bangladesh declares 3-day state mourning over Pope Francis' death
Bangladesh government has announced a three-day state mourning following the death of Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church.
According to a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday night (April 23), the mourning period will begin on Thursday and continue through Saturday.
During these three days, the national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government, semi-government, autonomous, and educational institutions, as well as at all government and private buildings across the country. The same protocol will be observed at Bangladesh's diplomatic missions abroad.
Additionally, special prayers will be held for the soul of the late Pope.
Pope Francis, known for his reformative leadership and global influence, passed away on Monday at the age of 88. The Argentine-born pontiff had been battling double pneumonia and was hospitalised for 38 days at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. He was discharged on March 23, but ultimately succumbed to complications.
Appointed as Pope in March 2013, Francis was revered for his humble approach and efforts to modernize the Catholic Church, even as he faced criticism from traditionalists. His passing has triggered an outpouring of grief among Catholics worldwide.
His funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday in Vatican City.
