The Election Commission has officially registered the Bangladesh Development Party (BDP) as a political party, and has assigned the symbol 'Fulkopi' (Cauliflower) to it.

The Election Commission Secretariat issued a notification about this on Sunday (February 2).

The notification mentions that, in accordance with the ruling and order issued by the Honorable High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on December 12 (Writ 6431/2023), the Bangladesh Election Commission has registered the Bangladesh Development Party as a political party under the Representation of the People Order (RPO), pending further instructions. The party's symbol, 'Fullkopi,' has been assigned, with registration number 54.

BDP's chairman, AKM Anwarul Islam, had filed a writ petition in the High Court after the Election Commission denied the party's registration.

Following the verdict on December 12, Anwarul Islam stated that the writ petition had been filed on May 25, 2023, challenging the Election Commission's decision. He noted that the High Court issued a rule on June 23, 2023, asking why the party should not be granted registration, and after hearing the case, the court ruled in favor of granting registration to BDP.

Previously, on October 26, 2022, the Bangladesh Development Party had applied to the Election Commission for registration as a political party, but the Commission rejected their application on April 10, 2023.
