Bangladesh’s Saikat to officiate in vital BGT Tests
Bangladeshi umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat has been appointed to officiate in two crucial matches of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) between Australia and India. Saikat will serve as the TV umpire in the iconic Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), starting December 26, and take on an on-field umpiring role in the decisive fifth Test in Sydney, beginning January 7, 2025.
Saikat’s appointment to these high-stakes matches is a testament to his growing reputation in international cricket. Known for his calm demeanor and accurate decision-making, the ICC Elite Panel umpire has officiated 23 Tests, 100 ODIs, and 73 T20Is in a career that continues to set benchmarks for Bangladeshi officials.
The Boxing Day Test will see Saikat working alongside on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Michael Gough, providing technological oversight for reviews as the TV umpire. For the fifth Test in Sydney, he will partner with Gough on the field, marking a significant milestone in his career.
