Barcelona, Atletico clinch dominant wins to reach Copa del Rey quarterfinals
Barcelona claimed a dominant 5-1 victory over Real Betis, while Atletico Madrid extended their record-winning streak with a 4-0 rout of Elche in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, with both teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
Barcelona extended their strong form with a 5-1 win over Real Betis in the Copa del Rey round of 16. Gavi and Jules Koundé found the net in the first half, while Raphinha, Ferran Torres, and Lamine Yamal added goals in the second half. This victory marked Barcelona's fourth consecutive win in 2025, following their 5-2 triumph over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.
The Catalan side took control early, with Gavi scoring in the 3rd minute and Koundé adding a second in the 27th, both assisted by Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal. Despite a couple of goals being disallowed by VAR, Barcelona stayed dominant. Raphinha, Torres, and Yamal completed the scoring in the second half, ensuring an easy progression to the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, Atletico Madrid continued their record-breaking form with a 4-0 victory over second-division Elche, extending their winning streak to 15 matches—a new club record. Alexander Sorloth opened the scoring in the 8th minute, then converted a penalty in the 29th. Rodrigo Riquelme added a stunning long-range strike in the 61st, and Julián Álvarez completed the scoring in the 75th minute.
Despite missing several key players, Atletico dominated the match from start to finish. Elche was reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute after Nicolás Fernández was shown a second yellow card. Atletico’s clinical performance ensured they stayed on track for a strong run in the Copa del Rey.
