Barisal University VC, pro VC, treasurer relieved of duties

The government has relieved Professor Dr Shuchita Sharmin from her position as Vice-Chancellor of Barishal University, along with Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Golam Rabbani and Treasurer Professor Dr Md Mamunur Rashid.

This decision was formalised on Tuesday through an official notification signed by Senior Assistant Secretary ASM Kasem of the Secondary and Higher Education Division.

The administrative changes follow weeks of escalating demonstrations by students, who accused Dr Sharmin of authoritarian leadership, negligence in student welfare, and failure to address a 22-point list of demands.

Protests intensified after the death of a female student, allegedly due to inadequate medical care, and the Vice-Chancellor's subsequent legal actions against students. The movement included campus shutdowns, torch processions, and an indefinite hunger strike, with support from faculty members.

The ministry's decision aims to restore normalcy and address the concerns raised by the university community.
