A significant leadership change is looming at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as former captain Aminul Islam Bulbul is expected to replace Faruque Ahmed as president. The move follows the government’s push for reform within the board.

On Wednesday night, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, informed Faruque Ahmed in a private meeting that the government wishes to bring new leadership to the BCB. Faruque, however, stated that he has not yet made a decision about stepping down and has requested more time.

The next BCB election is scheduled for October, and under the revised constitution, board directors will vote to elect new leadership. Aminul Islam, currently serving as the ICC’s Asia Development Manager, has accepted a proposal to become a BCB director under the National Sports Council’s nomination. Although his name has been floated for the presidency, he has remained reserved on the issue.

“They contacted me a few days ago to ask if I would be willing to serve,” said Aminul. “I told them there are many areas in the board that need work, and I am open to contributing wherever necessary.”

He added, “The presidency hasn’t been discussed directly. A president must be elected by the board. No one can simply appoint someone to the position.”

Faruque Ahmed, who took over as president after Nazmul Hassan Papon resigned last August following a change in government, has been under increasing pressure. His tenure has been marred by allegations of mismanagement, particularly concerning corruption within the BPL and misappropriation of BCB funds.

Despite assuming the role through due process as an NSC-nominated director, Faruque’s position has become increasingly untenable. Sources within the board say the government is keen to avoid further controversy ahead of the election, although any direct interference could risk sanctions from the International Cricket Council (ICC), which strictly prohibits government involvement in cricket board affairs.

Faruque acknowledged the recent meeting with the Youth and Sports Ministry and confirmed that discussions about leadership changes did take place. However, he reiterated that he has not made a final decision and is still weighing his options.

Meanwhile, Aminul, Bangladesh’s first Test centurion, remains a respected figure in international cricket circles. Though he currently resides in Melbourne, Australia, he returned to Bangladesh recently on personal matters, which coincided with the leadership discussions. He has expressed willingness to serve temporarily if appointed, but has no intention of holding the post long-term due to family commitments.

If confirmed, Aminul is expected to lead the BCB until the October election, after which a full board vote will determine the next permanent president.
