Canada-born Bangladeshi footballer Shamit Shome had earlier confirmed his interest in playing for the Bangladesh national team. Now, a major step has been taken as the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) announced that the Canada Football Federation has granted him clearance to play.

BFF Vice President Fahad Karim confirmed the matter on Thursday (May 1). He said, "The Canada Football Federation sent Shamit’s No Objection Certificate (NOC) this morning."

Bangladesh is set to face Singapore in an AFC Championship qualifier in June, and ahead of that, the BFF is planning to host a friendly match—targeting it as Shamit Shome’s debut.

To play for the national team, Shamit needs a Bangladeshi passport. Fahad Karim said, "We will apply for his passport tomorrow. Once we receive it, we’ll proceed with his registration with FIFA. BFF is making all the necessary preparations to have him on the field in Dhaka on June 10."
