BNP expels 217 leaders for defying party orders
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled a total of 217 leaders for disobeying party decisions during the ongoing upazila council elections. The expulsions occurred in four phases: 80 leaders in the first phase, 69 in the second, 55 in the third, and 13 in the fourth and final phase.
This information was revealed in a BNP press release on Sunday (May 26.)
According to the press release, the BNP is not participating in any elections, including upazila elections, under the current government and election commission. On April 16, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the party's senior joint secretary general, stated in a press release that the party's standing committee had decided that the Sheikh Hasina government, along with its Election Commission and civil and police administrations, is incapable of conducting free, fair, participatory, and acceptable elections. There is no conducive environment for holding such elections in the country, therefore, the BNP will not participate in the upazila elections.
Meanwhile, the sixth upazila parishad election is being held in four phases. According to the schedule, voting took place in the upazilas during the first and second phases on May 8 and May 21.
