Case filed against OC, 25 others for demanding bribes in Cumilla

A case has been filed against 25 people, including Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Muradnagar Police Station Zahidur Rahman, on charges of demanding bribes and extortion at Muradnagar in Cumilla.

A person named Md Mehedi Hasan filed the case as the plaintiff with Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court of Cumilla on Thursday (March 27) afternoon.

Judge Md Mominul Haque of the Magistrate’s Court took cognizance of the case. The judge ordered PBI Cumilla to submit the investigation report by May 19, said plaintiff's lawyer Md Abdur Razzak.

He said plaintiff Md Mehedi Hasan is an electrician by profession. It is mentioned in the case that the accused demanded extortion and bribe from his brother, CNG driver Md Abul Kalam. The number one accused in the case is Muradnagar Police Station OC Zahidur Rahman.

According to court sources, on March 24, Abu Kalam was taken away by the police from the Nagarpar CNG station in Companiganj upazila. When Mehedi Hasan requested the police to release his brother, OC Zahidur Rahman demanded a bribe of Tk 1 lakh. Earlier, the other accused in the case demanded a bribe of Tk 10,000 from Abul Kalam, also a Sramik Dal leader. When Kalam did not pay the bribe, the accused called the police and arrested Kalam, the plaintiff alleged.

Earlier, on the night of March 24, when the police arrested CNG driver Abul Kalam at Muradnagar police station, local Jubo Dal leaders and activists went there to release him. There was a commotion there. In the wake of the incident, the police and a student coordinator filed two separate cases as plaintiffs. In protest, a half-day traffic ban was observed in the Companyganj area of Muradnagar on Wednesday.
