A case was filed against 28 people with the Motijheel police station in Dhaka on Friday over the attack on a rally of students belonging to national minorities in front of the NCTB Bhaban on Wednesday.

At least 200-300 unnamed people were also made accused in the case.

‘We filed the case at about 1:30am on Friday,’ said Pahari Chhatra Parishad Dhaka city unit president Jagadish Chakma, also the plaintiff of the case.

The named accused in the case include Arif Al Khabir, 38, and Md Abbas, 24, who were arrested earlier. The other accused include Dhaka University law department student Md Ziaul Haque, 28, DU criminology department student Mohiuddin Rahat, 23, DU physics department student Md Yakub Mozumder, 20, and Shahadat Farazi Sakib, 35, who was sacked recently from the political platform Jatiya Nagorik Committee, according to the case statement.

When the national minority students’ procession reached beneath the Metro Rail station at Motijheel at about 12:50pm, Students for Sovereignty attacked them with sticks tied with the national flags leaving 15 people injured, according to the case statements.

Motijheel police station officer-in-charge Mesbah Uddin said that they had arrested two persons accused in the case and they are now in jail.

‘We will seek remand for the two arrested for interrogation. We are investigating into the case,’ the OC added.

Those demonstrating under the banner of Students for Sovereignty, an organisation claimed to be of Dhaka University students, twice attacked the group protesting under the banner of Sangkhubdhho Adivasi Chhatra-Janata in the police presence.

Recently the National Curriculum and Textbook Board removed graffiti carrying the word Adivasi from the back cover of the Bangla grammar book for classes IX and X, following a demand from the Students for Sovereignty.
