Chief advisor stresses national unity for state reforms
Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has underscored the vital need for national unity to implement necessary reforms and repair the state.
Speaking at a meeting with editors from the top 20 local newspapers at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday (September 3), Yunus highlighted that the recent student-led mass uprising presents a significant opportunity for advancing Bangladesh.
However, he emphasized that achieving this progress requires strong national unity.
Following the meeting, Chief Advisor's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed the media at the Foreign Service Academy.
Quoting Yunus, Alam said, "The Chief Advisor stated that the student protests have created a crucial chance to repair the state, and it is essential to leverage this opportunity to elevate Bangladesh. National unity is crucial to this endeavor."
Editors offered various suggestions, including a tenure of at least two years, with some advocating for up to three years. They also highlighted the importance of determining the interim government's tenure based on its reform agenda and work plan.
Highlighting the editors' suggestions, Shafiqul Alam said, "The suggestions included providing at least 2 years, with many advocating for a duration of two to three years. Some suggested allowing as much time as needed to complete the essential reforms."
The meeting also addressed several key proposals, such as amending or rewriting the constitution, forming a law commission, constitution commission, media commission, and police commission. The editors also recommended reforms to enhance the effectiveness of the police and improve the Election Commission.
Yunus encouraged the editors to report on the interim government's shortcomings, expressing his commitment to media freedom and a desire for a transparent and dynamic media landscape.
The Chief Advisor reiterated his belief in the media's role in a democratic society and welcomed constructive criticism to aid in the government's efforts to address the country's challenges.
