Election Reform Commission Chief Badiul Alam Majumder has said that the commission has recommended cancellation of votes in any constituency in the national elections if less than 40 percent votes are casted.

Talking to reporters at the Election Commission (EC) building in Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday (January 21), he said, “It has also been recommended that those involved in enforced disappearances, murders and crimes against humanity will not be able to run for election.”

Majumder said the reform in the electoral system has been proposed not for any malicious purpose, but to make the electoral arena free from corruption.

The head of the Electoral Reform Commission said a commission will be formed to try the election commissioners, including the past three chief election commissioners, for failing to fulfill their constitutional duties. They need to be tried after an impartial investigation.

Badiul Alam Majumder said, “We are not in favour of keeping any party away from the election. However, the people and political parties of the country will decide whether those who committed the July genocide and crimes against humanity will participate in the election and whether they will come to power in the future.”
