Nationwide mourning is being observed today recalling those who were killed during quota reform movement. On this day, black badges will be worn and doa mahfils will be organised in all mosques. Besides, special prayers will be offered in all temples, churches and pagodas across the country, reports BSS. This decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held yesterday at Prime Minister's Office here with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair. Later in the day, Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain briefed reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat here about the outcomes of the meeting. He said a condolence motion was adopted in today's meeting expressing profound grief at the demise of those killed during the quota reform movement. The cabinet secretary said Home State Minister Asaduzzaman Khan presented a report on the situation over the quota reform movement at the meeting and it was discussed. As a result, he said, the condolence motion was adopted and the meeting decided to observe the nationwide mourning today. Replying to a question, Mahbub Hossain said that the home minister on Sunday informed about the death of 147 people in this incident and afterwards, the reports of three more deaths were found. The death toll in this incident is now 150, he added.

কোটা সংস্কার আন্দোলন ঘিরে সংঘাত-সহিংসতায় নিহতদের স্মরণে আজ মঙ্গলবার (৩০ জুলাই) দেশব্যাপী শোক পালন করা হবে। শোক পালনের অংশ হিসেবে কালো ব্যাজ ধারণ করা হবে। মসজিদে দোয়া এবং মন্দির, গির্জা ও প্যাগোডায় প্রার্থনা করা হবে। সোমবার মন্ত্রিসভার বৈঠকে এ সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়। প্রধানমন্ত্রীর কার্যালয়ে এ বৈঠক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা বৈঠকে সভাপতিত্ব করেন। বৈঠক শেষে বিকেলে সচিবালয়ে ব্রিফিংয়ে মন্ত্রিপরিষদ সচিব মো. মাহবুব হোসেন সাংবাদিকদের এ তথ্য জানান। তিনি বলেন, “কোটাবিরোধী আন্দোলন নিয়ে যে পরিস্থিতির সৃষ্টি হয়েছিল, সেখানে (মন্ত্রিসভা বৈঠক) স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রী মহোদয়ের তরফ থেকে একটি প্রতিবেদন উপস্থাপন করা হয়েছিল। সেখানে অন্যান্য মন্ত্রীরাও তাদের তরফ থেকে বিস্তারিত তথ্য উপস্থাপন করেছেন।” “সেখানে সেসব তথ্য পর্যালোচনা করে আলোচনা করে মন্ত্রিসভা দুটি সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহণ করেছে। একটি হলো এই আন্দোলনের ঘটনায় যারা নিহত হয়েছেন, তাদের জন্য একটি শোক প্রস্তাব গ্রহণ করেছেন। সেই প্রস্তাবটি আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে নেওয়া হয়েছে। আর দ্বিতীয় যেটি করা হয়েছে, সেটি আগামীকাল দেশব্যাপী শোক পালন করা হবে।” মো. মাহবুব হোসেন জানান, শোক পালনের অংশ হিসেবে কালো ব্যাজ ধারণ করা হবে। মসজিদে দোয়া, মন্দির-গির্জা-প্যাগোড়ায় প্রার্থনা করা হবে।
