CUET closed for indefinite period, students ordered to vacate hall
The administration of Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) finally announced the closure of the university for an indefinite period in the face of student agitation.
The students have been instructed to vacate the hall, according to a notification signed by Registrar (Additional Duty) Prof Dr Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir and issued on Thursday (April 25) afternoon.
The notification said, “Due to the volatile situation evolved as a result of the untimely death of two talented students of the university in a tragic road accident on April 22, all academic activities (including examination) of the university have been suspended for an indefinite period by the decision of the meeting of the Academic Council held on April 25 under the chairmanship of the vice-chancellor.”
It said, “The male students have to leave the hall by 5:00pm on Thursday and female students by 9:00am on Friday morning. University buses will run from the campus to the city to facilitate the students to leave the campus.”
Earlier on April 22, two students of CUET were killed and one was injured after being hit by a bus on the Chattogram-Kaptai road at Rangunia upazila in Chattogram.
Since then, the university students have been staging demonstrations on the campus to realise a 10-point demand. In response, the CUET administration decided to close the university for an indefinite period.
However, the agitating students expressed anger over the decision of the administration to close the university.
A student, on condition of anonymity, told the media that this decision was made to suppress the students. “No one will leave the hall stopping the movement, everyone will stay on the campus,” he said.
