Cumilla City Corporation Election

Cumilla gets female mayor for first time

This is the first time a woman has been elected as mayor in Cumilla City Corporation election through direct vote. Dr Tahsin Bahar, the daughter of Cumilla-6 Sadar Constituency MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar, created that history.

She won the Mayoral election with bus symbol by a huge margin of votes. She got 48,089 votes in 105 polling centres. Her nearest rival candidate BNP leader Monirul Haque Sakku, who contested in the by-polls under the Table Clock symbol, got 26, 897 votes.

After this huge victory, Tahsin Bahar Suchona said, "I am not a city-mother, I want to be a city-daughter and always be there for everyone in weal and woe. I will not take the title of any guardian or powerful person. I want to be a city-daughter and serve the people of the city. For that, I am grateful and indebted to all the people of this beloved city. I will never be able to repay the debt they voted for me out of love."

"I always seek full support from all citizens," she added.

On Saturday (March 9), the voting for the Cumilla City Corporation took place from 8.00am to 4.00pm. There are 242,458 voters in Cumilla City Corporation.
Awami League candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat was elected mayor in the election of 15 June 2022. After his death, the post of mayor was declared vacant and the election commission announced the schedule for the by-election.
