Cyclone Remal inflicts Tk7,000cr loss on 20 districts

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Mohibur Rahman has said that Cyclone Remal has resulted in a loss of Tk6,880 crore in 20 districts of the country.

“I have received the loss account of 20 districts. A loss of Tk6,880 crore has been incurred. On May 26, Cyclone Remal hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh. As a result of this, several coastal areas were flooded, resulting in submergence of these areas. Besides, 16 people lost their lives. Several roads, embankments, houses and social institutions were damaged,” he said while addressing a press briefing at the ministry's conference room at the Secretariat on Sunday (June 2) afternoon emerging out of an inter-ministerial meeting on the overall issue of Cyclone Remal.

Mentioning that various activities have been taken for disaster preparation since the last few days, the state minister said: “We have conducted pre-disaster activities in coordination with all departments of the government. Now we are continuing the post-disaster activities. The day after Cyclone Remal hit, I personally contacted the MPs of the coastal districts over phone and inquired about the local people.”

Regarding the damage, the state minister said that so far, Tk5.75 crore cash, 5,500 tons of rice, 9,000 packets of dry food, 200 bundles of cotton wool, Tk2.45 crore for cattle food and Tk2.45 crore for buying baby food have been distributed in 19 districts.

The state minister also said: “Floods have occurred in Sylhet, Sunamganj and Dinajpur districts for the past few days. Tk20 lakh cash, 500 tons of rice, Tk10 lakh cow fodder and Tk10 lakh baby food have been distributed in Sylhet to help the flood victims. In Sunamganj, Tk15 lakh cash, Tk5 lakh cow fodder and Tk5 lakh baby food were distributed. In Dinajpur, Tk15 lakh in cash and Tk3 lakh of dry and other food have been allotted.”
