Death toll from stampede in India rises to 121
The death toll from the stampede at a religious congregation in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, has increased to 121. The Uttar Pradesh Police registered an FIR against the event's organizers on Wednesday (July 3).
According to the local police reports, 80,000 people were allowed to attend the meeting. However, 250,000 people showed up, which is more than three times the permitted number.
Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has directed district officials to ensure the injured are hospitalized promptly and to expedite relief efforts.
The Chief Minister has also ordered the establishment of a probe committee to determine the underlying causes and prevent such tragedies in the future, according to the minister's office.
Ashish Kumar, district magistrate (DM), said, "The district administration is actively investigating the matter, with ongoing efforts to recover and assist the injured."
The stampede occurred during a crowded religious gathering, leading to chaos and a significant number of casualties. The exact cause of the stampede is still under investigation.
