The National Road Transport Advisory Council has decided to implement the ‘No helmet, no fuel’ policy, currently effective in the Dhaka metropolitan area only, all across the country.

As per the policy, motorcyclists cannot buy fuel from any petrol pump unless the driver and rider wear helmets.

This decision was made at the maiden meeting of the council at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office in the capital on Wednesday (May 15).

Presiding over the meeting, President of the advisory council of BRTA Obaidul Quader said, “It has been possible to make the motorcyclists and riders in Dhaka city wear helmets. Now we are going to implement this policy all over the country.”

Instructing that no battery-driven rickshaws should run on the streets of the capital, the minister said, “Ensure it first that no battery-powered rickshaws ply on Dhaka streets. Besides, implement the decision banning rickshaws and easy bikes on 22 highways.”

He said not only impose a ban on battery-powered rickshaws in the city, but make arrangements also to prevent them from running.

Commenting on the malpractice of horn blowing loudly, the minister said, “My protection car does not have a hooter for the last 10 years. Blowing hooters needs to be stopped. The hooters cannot be blown without emergency services.”
